Are Carbs Killing You?

Are Carbs Killing You?

Actually a very good question!

About 10 weeks ago I began my journey on the Keto diet this was bought about by my Mum who went to the Doctor for a routine blood test.

The results of which gave us cause for concern, while she was in the surgery she happened to see a book that they were selling called Death by Carbs written by Dr Stephen K Fairley. Without sounding overly dramatic this book changed both of our lives,

From the blood test it was obvious that my Mum had what was described in the book as metabolic Syndrome from all of the carbohydrates that Mum had been told to eat by the doctors that were now wanting her to take blood thinners and statins.

According to the main stream medical profession, breakfast should include cereal, whole-wheat toast and fruit all of which are loaded with carbohydrates and probably the absolute worst thing that you could start your day with.

Mum read the book and began a new diet plan, she later found that this was a Keto diet and limited herself to less than 50 Carbs per day, after 3 weeks she had lost 3 kg and then told me about her new eating plan and the book.

I had for years been unable to lose fat from my stomach even though i had exercised and thought i was eating healthy.

I too began to follow the Keto diet and read Dr Fairley’s book which i must say was written in a very entertaining manner, not at all what i expected.

Within the first week i had lost a kg then each week another until after 4 weeks i had lost 4 kg the weight came off my stomach and I started to really notice the difference, I had more energy and felt so much better and the feeling if having my liver pushed up under my ribcage after every meal started to go away. I had really given up on losing the feeling of having my organs crushed against my ribcage, Mum and I had both felt so awful for such a long time never knowing that it was the food we were eating and not just something that happened after menopause.

With each week that past i lost inches and after 6 weeks the weight loss slowed but has not stopped after about 9 weeks i have now lost a full 5 kg and many inches and the weight has dropped from my stomach arms and chest all of the areas i could not get smaller even with regular use of a rowing machine.

I have not once been hungry there is always things you can snack on boiled eggs have been a favorite.

And to everyone that told me I was nuts eating bacon and eggs for breakfast as i have always done. I can now tell them that it is not me that is nuts it is all of the people that assume they are doing the right thing eating Cow food (Grain) as I used to call it every morning.

Now my Mum has since had another blood test and it came back much improved and this time she was not offered blood thinner and her cholesterol had in fact dropped and this was only after about 10 weeks.

We intend to continue to follow the Keto low carb diet and maybe on occasions have a few more but I for one will never go back to how I ate before. The problem is Carbs are hiding in everything and it is not just the obvious culprits like Bread, pasta, rice , potatoes all wheat flour products such a cakes pastries and biscuits as well as all of the sugar filled drinks, cordials and energy drinks that people consume every day without a second thought, is it any wonder obesity is becoming so prevalent and unless you read the back of packets to see how many carbs are hiding in your food you will never know.

It does not go unnoticed that the Nutritional Information panel on many products is written in a font size that you almost need a magnifying glass just to read it.

I am writing this in the hope that even just one person will read it and that it may change the way you look at food, what we have been told all of our lives about the food pyramid is a fallacy and we really need to eat very little grain and cut sugar from your diet as much as possible.

I have included the link below to the book that changed my life and i hope it will change yours too.

A big thankyou to Dr Stephen Fairley!
